DRONGOLOIDZ!

Welcome back to YEAHS & NAHS, YNR’s once weekly recap & recommendations column for paid subscribers that has gone long abandoned because I am a nitwit who stopped taking my pills for a little too long.

I’m so sorry to all my paid (and unpaid) subs who’ve clung on waiting for me to get my act together. Simply put, life has been hectic since the book came out, and it’s taken me a long time to recalibrate. But never you mind, cos this is me going forward, scout’s honour:

If you want to help me stick to my candy diet, please consider becoming a paid sub. $5 a month goes along way now, especially after my NDIS application was turned down (I personally think I picked the best time to be made to do this [wasn’t my idea!], don’t you?)

Vyvanse should be free. It should be delivered to my door by Bill Shorten, personally.

Anyway, let’s get on with it…

THE ROUND-UP!

Where I catch you up on what’s been going on. Seeing as its been close to six months, there’s too much to say, so I’ll stick to recent events.

NOCK LOOSE is on a tear

Since we last spoke, NOCK LOOSE hit its 3rd (wowaweesa!) print run. It’s not-so-officially (it hit shelves in February but it can’t be announced until June? Hey, I don’t get it either!) expanded edition is available now in good bookstores everywhere. It’s in the superior chibi B format, and is filled with extra goodies, like pages from the Sukeban Yumi manga, and vintage beer ads for Captain Bodkin’s Cider.

This is a post-modern literary debut by an independent publisher based in Western Australia, so I’m truly humbled by its success. But the book runs on word of mouth (literally $0 on marketing) so if you buy it, share it, and spruik it like you’ve got a bottle of dexies at a 2009 house rave, you are truly helping me carve a weird little niche in the otherwise miserable sandpit we call ‘OzLit.’

The Battler gets better and better

I am so proud of what Straying for the Morsel and Producer Dan and I have pulled-off with The Battler. It truly feels like the only place in Australia having these sorts of conversations (highly demented and defamatory), while championing Australian literature and oscillating between offensive impressions of beloved public figures.

Since we last spoke we’ve had so many great guests, including Amy Remeikis, Steve Toltz, Zarah Butcher-McGunnigle, Miriam Webster, and yes, even my homegrown literary hero, Michael Winkler. That one is a personal fav and I implore you to listen.

That said, if you want an ep that showcases just how feral we can get, I think this one is our funniest yet:

I had a great chat with Emmett Stinson last week…

Speaking of The Battler, I uploaded the chat I had with renowned literary critic/scholar/top bloke Emmett Stinson at Perth’s Lawson Flats (oh so bougie! my country cousins were wigging out! as was I!) as a Battler Bonus Ep, as we were off last week cos Tim came down with the dreaded Hentai Virus. Listen here:

WA is the furnace room of our global heat death. Awesome!

In crikey, I went on a tear about WA’s Labor Government/Roger Cook peeling back the state’s emission targets, as if our stated goals to meet them was anything but a tongue-in-cheek gag to begin with. Read here:

YEAHS & NAHS…

ft. Michael Winkler, Zarah Butcher-McGunnigle, SJXSJC + more!

Boy oh boy, I am sitting on 6ish months of amazing recommendations. I can’t go through all of them, so I’ll keep it brief and save the rest for future YNR’s. Just to remind you how this works:

  • Yeah = stuff I like 👍 and reckon you’ll like 👍

  • Nah = stuff I don’t like 👎 junk that blows big-time 👎

These are for paid subs only! And there’s never been a better time to sign-up…

YEAH…

Michael Winkler’s Griefdogg

I’ll cut to the chase: Griefdogg is the greatest Australian novel since Michael Winkler’s Grimmish, the self-published masterpiece from 2021 that I implore you to track down and devour if you haven’t already.
