Yeahs & Nahs
ft. Arrival Fest, Bad Whip, Jen Calleja, and spearmint milk
DRONGOLOIDZ!
Happy WA day from my Mega Pit to yours! I hope you are taking a quokka selfie, licking a lump of iron ore, and washing it all down with a lukewarm carton of Masters’ spearmint milk! Quick! Which Masters cow do you find the most fuckable?
I’m writing this week’s Yeahs & Nahs from the state room of Alan Bond’s Swan Draft blimp as it flies the full length of Perth’s infinite suburban sprawl. When we secede, I’m drawing a border line around Mandurah, but (too many poms).
Anyway, I’ve got a tonne of good stuff for ya, SandGroper or no. Let us hoon down the Canning Hwy called ‘life’ and get into the goof stuff together, yeah?
THE ROUND-UP!
Where I catch you up on what’s been going on. Seeing as its been close to six months, there’s too much to say, so I’ll stick to recent events.
NOCK LOOSE expanded edition is ‘officially’ out June 2 (aka tomorrow)
NOCK LOOSE: EXPANDED EDITION is ‘officially’ out June 2 aka tomorrow! It contains more goofs, more gags, and very beautiful pages from the Sukeban Yumi manga, as illustrated by my wonderful cousin Ned (happy birthday for last week, Neddy!)
Why ‘officially’? Damned if I know! The Expanded Edition has been available on bookshelves since at least early March (that’s when I first ran into it in Readings Carlton), but now it’s available officially, I guess.
It’s in the much cuter/more convenient B format — even better for putting in a big sock and belting your enemies with I reckon. A must cop for any NOCK LOOSE die-hards who need to see what a vintage Captain Bodkin’s Cider magazine ad looks like.
Again, very grateful for all the love and support you’ve sent my way re: NOCK LOOSE. It is a peculiar little novel in the context of Australian literature, and it’s by a freak author from a freak state, sent out by one of Australia’s last independent publishers. Any time you recommend it, share it, review it, or even lambast it etc. is doing me a massive favour, and I truly appreciate it.
The Battler ft. Will Cox
Last week The Battler had alt-author extraordinaire Will Cox on to discuss his 2023 Keeping up Appearances inspired self-published novel, Hyacinth, as well as his serialised fiction, Pictureland.
It’s a great chat and you can check it out right here:
Ok, I think it’s time for…
YEAHS & NAHS…
ft. Arrival Fest, Bad Whip, Jen Calleja, and spearmint milk
For those gone loopy off too much spearmint milk, here’s how this works:
Yeah = stuff I like 👍 and reckon you’ll like 👍
Nah = stuff I don’t like 👎 rot for clotted rotters 👎
These are for paid subs only! I’m trying to hit 200 paid subs in the next 3 months. Come on over, the flavoured milk is fine!
YEAH…
Arrival Festival is the doctor Freo needs
In the spirit of WA DAY: it’s the second year of Arrival Festival, a neat-o, wild, and wonderful music festival happening in my hometown, Walyalup aka Freo.
Featured acts include Cate Le Bon, Wednesday, Dry Cleaning, and a heap of local favourites, with gigs taking place at incredibly-Freo spots like The Old Naval Store (big shed) and the refurbished Wyola Club (former RSL where my mum would drag me to heated union meetings as a tot).
I was lucky enough to catch Cate Le Bon and Drifting Clouds this past week: two memorable sets both floated higher by the goodness of this community coming together to carve something out for itself in a town that has otherwise felt a bit flat lately.
I’m working on a longer piece to this effect atm, but in short: Perth has the best music scene in the country, and if you’re not exploring it (no matter where you’re
