YEAHS & NAHS
Hirokazu Kore-eda's filmography, Judy Gemstone, Pete Seeger's forehead, Flat Whites, Aussie Trump n' more!
How the bloody hell are ya?
First off, I’m sorry this weeks YEAHS & NAHS is a day late. I’m getting buggered sideways by life and work at the moment, and had to spend the weekend playing catch-up on a lot of neck-crickers I couldn’t put off any longer.
One thing I did was give YNR a bit of a spruce up. We now have proper howdy pages for new subscribers, paid subscribers, Big Dog founding members, and the general passer-bys stopping to say “what’s all this then?” etc. I’m also paying a man ten bob a week to stand by the YNR’s office door and bop any looky-loos on the head with a billy club, so we can roll them and spend their wallet stuffings on improving Our Content, for you, dear Drongoloids.
We are currently a mere 30 subscribers away from 1000. Hot damn, that’s wild to me. If you’re enjoying YNR, or take pity on me (mistah, I am poorly!), then please help me spread the good word — I live in a bucket in a cave in a canyon (Perth), so every little bit helps.
Anyhow, let’s get down to business!
p.s. I’m still working out how to format this column, so please be patient w. me / feel free to share any ideas you have about how it should look/be structured every week! xox
pps I’m goin’ sicko mode w. the italics rn. don’t ask why, i dunno either.
THIS WEEK’S ROUND-UP!
in which I catch you up on goings on…
Dr. Boombazza vs. Mark Latham’s Grotesque Skull
My family GP, Dr. Vinnie Boombazza, joined us last week as YNR’s first guest columnist. A Perth-renowned phrenologist who graduated from The Alan Bond Institute of Remedial Adult Learning and Finance, Dr. Boombazza shared his thoughts on the “oh so gross” heads of Australia’s far-right. Be checking it out!
The Battler ft. Peter Korotaev
Straying for the Morsel and I host a weekly lefty news, politics, n’ culture podcast called The Battler. This week, we chatted with Australian-Ukrainian journalist Peter Korotaev, who writes the incredible Events in Ukraine substack, about the latest in the war between Ukraine and Russia, and just how he goes about cover it.
It was a fascinating chat where — I’m happy to admit — I had next to little to add. Listening to Peter talk was both enlightening and harrowing, but he’s able to make so many complex factors immediately understandable to even someone as uninformed as me. Give it a listen!
Chasing After Life in Kore-eda’s ‘Asura’
I reviewed Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda’s (keep scrolling for more on him!) sublime Netflix series Asura for The Saturday Paper. This is the best thing streaming right now — if you’re already a Kore-eda Kook, as I am, then just know it’s essentially a seven hour movie shot on vintage Kodak film stock that he writes, directs, and edits. Netflix is stupidly sinking it in their infinite sea of slop with little to no fanfare. Seek it out and watch it, it’s an absolute delight.
NOCK LOOSE, coming July 1
Just your weekly reminder that my debut novel NOCK LOOSE is coming July 1, via Fremantle Press. Pre-orders are about to go live, but I’ll make a special post about that when things, uh, kick off. It’s a good book but. But it, please.
